Glowing Shark Wears Cloak of Invisibility

The first detailed study of the rare splendid lantern shark reveals that not only does it glow in the dark, but the light effects create a “cloak of invisibility” that helps shield it from predators….

Oh, the tiny splendid lantern shark not only glows but it does more than Harry Potter could do with a cloak of invisibility.

I’ve never gotten interested in Shark Week, but this is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.

“Its natural light show, produced by light-emitting organs called photophores, serves many functions. The cloak of invisibility is perhaps one of the most beneficial, since it helps to protect the small, shark from upward-looking predators. The lantern shark is a member of the small dogfish sharks.
“The photophores replace the down-welling light from the sun, which is absorbed by the shark’s body,” lead author Julien Claes explained to Discovery News. “The silhouette of the shark therefore disappears when seen from below.”

I mean have you ever heard anything more insane? Nature, you are one crazy lady.

I love this post on the design of the signage in the New York Times building, done by Pentagram Design. I remember noticing the great interior design of the building while I was watching Page One and it’s really fun to see these close up:

“Early in the design process, the designers and their clients at the newspaper decided to reinforce the unique Times culture through as many details as possible. As a result, every bathroom sign, every back-of-house sign, every public room sign bears a different image culled from the paper’s immense photographic archive. Working with Times archivists, the designers selected historic black and white images to create these hundreds of one-of-a-kind signs.”

There are several more in the full article. The bathroom signs are great, and I really love the balcony one, too.
